This requires the definition of many steps, interactions and predefined fields on changing regions in the thermal and structural model. A plug-in has been developed to simply the set-up of more complex welding models: the Abaqus Welding Interface. More on that in a later blog, to be called Welding simulation using Abaqus - Part 2. Unlike Abaqus/Standard where the identified nodes will stay bonded if the crack is not activated, in Abaqus/Explicit the nodes identified by the contact clearance definition will separate without generating any interface stress. Similar to Abaqus/Standard, cracks can propagate from single or multiple crack tips for the same pair of surfaces.
The propagation behavior of crack with different initiation position is affected by the constraint effect differences in dissimilar weld joints mechanical heterogeneity. The ductile fracture model of interface crack in dissimilar weld joints was built by adopting extended finite element method; the propagation characteristic of interface crack was summarized. The results indicate that the strength mismatch of materials at sides of interface will increase trend of crack advancing into the relative soft material which has lower yield strength and lower hardening exponent.
